There's no dramatic playoff subplot here, just a rubber match with real fantasy stakes: Detroit rolls into this series finale looking to complete a three-game sweep, and given how the first two games went, the Athletics have to be dreading the sight of these road grays one more time.
This is Game 3 of 3 in a regular-season set that's already gotten ugly. Saturday's opener was a 13-1 blowout for Detroit, and Sunday's follow-up wasn't much closer at 8-6, also going to the Tigers. Detroit has won five straight games against Oakland dating back through July, a stretch that includes scores of 4-1, 6-1 and 6-2 in early July meetings. If you're looking for a trend, it's not subtle.
The records tell the story of two teams heading in opposite directions, even if neither is separated by much in the standings. The Athletics sit at 45-65, and their run differential of -142 (4.4 runs scored per game against 5.7 allowed) is about as bleak as it looks on paper. Oakland has dropped four of its last five, with the two most recent losses to Detroit by a combined score of 21-7. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 49-53 with a +50 run differential, scoring 4.3 per game while allowing just 3.8 — a formula that's kept them competitive even during a mixed week against Baltimore that included a blowout win and two losses, one by a single run.
On the mound, Detroit sends out Keider Montero, who carries a 3.344 ERA into this one — a number that should give Athletics hitters pause given how thin Oakland's lineup already is. Gage Jump starts for the home club with a 4.00 ERA, tasked with stopping the bleeding against a Tigers offense that's found runs in bunches all series.
The injury report only reinforces the disparity. Oakland is without Luis Severino, Brent Rooker, Denzel Clarke, Gunnar Hoglund and Shea Langeliers, among others — a lengthy list that's gutted the middle of both the rotation and the lineup. Tyler Soderstrom, Jacob Wilson and Jonah Heim are also unavailable, stripping away even more thump from an already-punchless attack. Detroit isn't fully healthy either, with Jack Flaherty, Jackson Jobe, Reese Olson and Kerry Carpenter among those sidelined, but the Tigers have enough depth to withstand it in a way Oakland simply doesn't right now.
Players to start: Nick Kurtz remains the one bright spot in Oakland's lineup worth trusting on JockBroker. He's projected for 15.3 fantasy points, right in line with his 15.5 season average, and his last three games (2, 2, 3) undersell a hitter who's shown he can still produce against quality arms. On the Detroit side, Dillon Dingler is an intriguing play behind the plate — he's projected for 12.2 points, actually above his 11.0 season average, and his last three games have been wildly boom-or-bust (4.5, 40, 4), suggesting he's due for another spike against a shorthanded Oakland pitching staff. Riley Greene also warrants a look at 11.1 projected points against a run-prevention unit that's been torched all series, even if that's a slight step down from his 12.3 average.
Players to fade: Lawrence Butler is the clearest fade on this slate. Projected for just 8.1 points, down from a 10.1 season average, his last three games (16, 0, 26) show an alarming lack of consistency, and facing Montero's sub-3.5 ERA doesn't help his floor. Jeff McNeil is another name to avoid — his 8.1 projection matches Butler's, but his recent stretch (8.5, 0, 5) points to a hitter without much rhythm right now. Spencer Torkelson, despite a strong recent run (16.5, 28.5, 37), projects for 10.5 points, a dip from his 11.3 average, and while he's clearly locked in, his ceiling this game may be capped somewhat given Oakland's beleaguered pitching still generating occasional swings and misses.
As for how this plays out on the field, there's little reason to expect Oakland flips the script after getting outscored 21-7 across the first two games of this set. Detroit's lineup has too much life right now, and Montero's command should keep an already-slumping Athletics offense off balance for most of the afternoon. Jump will need a clean outing to keep this competitive, but the recent history here — five straight Tigers wins in the head-to-head series — points to another long day at the plate for Oakland.
