deGrom Rolls, Rangers Beat Orioles 5-1
ARLINGTON — Jacob deGrom is still doing this at 38. The right-hander was the best player on the field Saturday, and it wasn't particularly close, as the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 and pushed their winning streak to four out of five.
This one had a familiar shape for anyone who's watched the Rangers open the season. Texas came in having already topped Baltimore once this week, 2-1, and deGrom made sure the trend continued. Kyle Bradish took the loss on the mound but wasn't without his moments, finishing with 33.2 fantasy points himself, a sign that the final score didn't fully reflect how competitive the pitching matchup was for stretches of the game. Tyler O'Neill added 9.5, and Pete Alonso chipped in 7.5, but beyond that the Baltimore offense went quiet. Colton Cowser managed 7.0, and the rest of the lineup, including Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Grant Wolfram and Carlos Narváez, did little to threaten a Texas team that looked in control from the opening innings.
The bigger picture here is about direction. The Rangers have now won four of their last five, with the only blemish a 1-5 loss to San Francisco sandwiched between wins over the Giants and this win over the Orioles. That's a strong week one for a Texas club looking to establish itself early, and deGrom looking this sharp is the kind of development that changes how people talk about this rotation going forward. For Baltimore, the story is starker. This loss extends a rough stretch against Texas this week. The Orioles have the talent, Holliday and Bradish showed that much again Saturday, but they need more from the middle and bottom of that order if they're going to turn things around. One run on the day, with too many hitters posting single-digit fantasy production, is not going to get it done against a team like this.
Three games into a long season, it's too early for declarations of any kind.
