Caglianone Powers Royals Past Cubs
Jac Caglianone is making the rest of the American League Central look silly a week into the season, and Saturday night was his loudest statement yet. The win continued a strong opening stretch for the Royals, who have now won three of their last five games. Kansas City took Saturday's game behind Caglianone's bat and another sturdy outing from the rotation.
Seth Lugo got the ball for the Royals and did what he's done for most of his career: eat innings and keep his team in position to win. The 36-year-old right-hander posted 30.0 fantasy points, pitching like a veteran who knows exactly how to work Kansas City's lineup advantage into a cushion. Lugo didn't need to be spectacular. He needed to be steady, and with Caglianone doing the heavy lifting offensively, steady was more than enough.
Caglianone's night was the story, full stop. Carson Kelly added 14.0 points behind the plate, and Michael Conforto and Nico Hoerner each chipped in 8.0 points. But Chicago's lineup couldn't generate enough behind Happ, and starter Colin Rea struggled to keep the Royals off the bases, finishing with just 3.0 fantasy points in an outing that put his offense in an early hole.
There were signs of life elsewhere in that Cubs lineup — Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch each contributed 5.0 fantasy points, and Tyrone Taylor added 7.5 more. But against a Kansas City club playing with real confidence right now, it wasn't close to enough.
For the Royals, this is exactly the kind of week you want out of the gate. If Caglianone keeps hitting like this, Kansas City's lineup has a legitimate centerpiece to build around all season. Lugo giving them length atop the rotation only makes the picture rosier. It's one game in August, but the early returns suggest this Royals team is going to be competitive in the Central all year.
Chicago, meanwhile, needs more than Happ carrying the offensive load if it wants to avoid dropping winnable games like this one. The talent is there — Crow-Armstrong, Busch, and Conforto all have shown flashes — but until the middle of that lineup wakes up consistently, Chicago will keep leaning too hard on one bat to bail them out.
