Guerrero Powers Blue Jays Past Phillies as Toronto Wins Series Opener
The Toronto Blue Jays picked up a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in a high-scoring affair that saw 12 combined runs cross the plate. Toronto's offense did the heavy lifting throughout, and the Blue Jays leaned on a deep lineup to hold off a Phillies team that never stopped fighting back.
For Philadelphia, it's an early-season gut check. The Phillies have now dropped three of their first five games, with two of those losses coming against this same Toronto club in back-to-back outings. That's not the kind of Week 1 storyline any club wants attached to its name, even with 161 games still left on the schedule.
The Phillies didn't go quietly. Trea Turner was terrific, leading Philadelphia with 34.5 fantasy points, and Aaron Nola matched him nearly point for point on the mound with a 33.0-point start. Nola has now given the Phillies quality innings this stretch, but he's been let down by a lineup and bullpen that couldn't finish the job behind him. Bryson Stott added 27.5 points, and Bryce Harper turned in a typically professional 25.5-point night, but Philadelphia simply couldn't hold off Toronto's offense over the course of the game.
Justin Crawford also factored in with 19.5 points, and Luis Arraez chipped in 18.5, showing that Philadelphia's lineup wasn't dormant. The issue was less about lack of production and more about coming up two runs short in a back-and-forth affair.
Philadelphia had shown signs of life in the middle of the week, blanking Washington 5-0 and rolling to a 7-3 win in another meeting with the Nationals. But sandwiched around those wins were a loss to Washington and two losses to Toronto, evidence that whatever the Phillies were doing well against Washington didn't fully carry over against a deeper Blue Jays lineup.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, needs to find some answers, and quickly. Nola's continued excellence on the mound is encouraging, and the Turner-Harper-Stott core showed enough Saturday to suggest this isn't a broken team. But dropping three of five to open the year is the kind of stretch that can snowball if it isn't corrected soon.
