Witt Jr. Powers Royals Past Athletics
Bobby Witt Jr. is doing Bobby Witt Jr. things again, and the rest of the American League should take notice.
The Royals shortstop turned in a monster performance Monday night, racking up 69.5 fantasy points as Kansas City handled the Athletics 9-5. Early signs point to a Royals club that's finding its rhythm just as the calendar turns toward the heart of summer.
This one didn't take long to get out of hand. Witt set the tone early, and the Royals never let the Athletics find their footing. Kansas City's lineup did damage across the board, spreading the offensive production in a way that should worry opposing pitching staffs going forward.
Witt's night was the headline, but he didn't do it alone. Jac Caglianone continues to look like a difference-maker in right field, posting 25.5 fantasy points in the win. The Florida product has been a steady complement to Witt in the middle of this lineup, and Monday's performance was another reminder of why Kansas City's front office is thrilled with what he's brought to the roster.
On the mound, Michael Wacha did what he's done for most of his career: give his team a chance to win. The veteran right-hander turned in an 18.5 fantasy-point outing, holding down an Athletics offense that had shown some life over its previous stretch. Wacha's experience showed in a game where the Royals needed length and stability from their starter, and he delivered exactly that.
Kyle Isbel chipped in 14.5 fantasy points from the center-field spot, while Salvador Perez added 11.5 as the designated hitter, still a steadying presence in that Kansas City lineup even as the roster gets younger around him. Carter Jensen, Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia all finished with 11.0 fantasy points apiece, the kind of balanced, everybody-contributes night that makes a lineup dangerous over a long season. This wasn't a one-man show, even if Witt was the story. It was a total team offensive effort that buried Oakland's pitching staff early and kept the pressure on all night.
For the Athletics, there were individual bright spots even in defeat. Tommy White led the way with 28.5 fantasy points at third base, continuing to make a case that he belongs in the middle of this lineup for the long haul. Jeff McNeil, the well-traveled veteran, added 26.0 fantasy points and showed once again why his bat still plays, regardless of the uniform he's wearing. Donovan Walton chipped in 14.5 points as well, giving the Athletics some offensive juice that simply wasn't enough to keep pace with Kansas City's attack.
The bullpen tried to hold the line. Scott Blewett turned in a 12.0-point relief outing and Hayden Juenger added 9.3, but by the time either arm entered the game, the deficit was already too steep to climb back from. Lawrence Butler and Henry Bolte rounded out the offensive night for Oakland with 8.0 and 7.5 points respectively, solid complementary pieces on a night that needed much more from the top of the order.
For Kansas City, this is now a team that has won three of its last five games, with losses against the Angels (0-1) and the Dodgers (2-4) the only blemishes. That kind of stretch, built on the strength of a lineup anchored by Witt and complemented by young talent like Caglianone, is exactly the sort of momentum a club wants heading deeper into the season. If Witt keeps performing at this level — and there's little reason in his recent track record to think he won't — the Royals have a real shot at establishing themselves as one of the more dangerous offensive clubs in the league.
The Athletics, meanwhile, need to find answers. An offense that flashes talent in White and McNeil but can't consistently support its pitching staff is a formula for a long summer if it doesn't get corrected soon.
