The gap between these two rosters is real, and Friday night's opener figures to reflect it.
The pitching matchup alone tells much of the story. Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for Arizona sporting a 2.712 ERA, the kind of number that makes a start feel like a mismatch before the first pitch is thrown. Cincinnati counters with Nick Lodolo, whose 4.521 ERA suggests a far more hittable arm. If form holds, this is the sort of pitching disparity that can decide a series before it even gets to Game 2.
Arizona's recent form has been a mixed bag — the Diamondbacks were throttled in back-to-back losses to Boston, falling 4-9 and 1-11, results that expose real vulnerability when the offense goes cold. But sandwiched around a loss to Atlanta, they also strung together a 10-3 rout and a 2-0 shutout win over the Braves, proof that this lineup can still turn a game into a laugher when it's clicking. Cincinnati's stretch has been considerably bleaker: a split series against St. Louis that included a 6-5 win but also losses of 0-3 and 1-2, followed by a brutal two-game set in Miami where the Reds were outscored 15-5. Whatever life Cincinnati flashed against the Cardinals evaporated against the Marlins, and that's the version of this team Arizona will see walk into the desert.
Health is a factor for both sides, and neither is at full strength. Arizona's pitching depth has been gutted — Zac Gallen, A.J. Puk, Blake Walston, Andrew Saalfrank, Cristian Mena, Corbin Burnes and Ryne Nelson are all out, with Drey Jameson also sidelined. That's an alarming list for a team trying to hold position in the standings, and it puts even more pressure on Rodriguez to deliver length on Friday. Nolan Arenado is listed as active and available despite appearing on the injury log, so Arizona should have its regular third baseman in the lineup. The bigger in-game question mark is Max Kepler, who is questionable with a day-to-day issue and could be a late scratch.
Cincinnati's situation is arguably worse from a lineup-construction standpoint. The Reds will be without Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, Matt McLain and Tyler Stephenson — essentially the infield and catching corps that would otherwise anchor this offense — along with Blake Dunn in center. Pitching-wise, Hunter Greene, Brandon Williamson and Graham Ashcraft remain out, with Tony Santillan also unavailable. For a team already near the bottom of the run-differential ledger, missing that much of the everyday core makes life brutally difficult against a pitcher like Rodriguez.
Offensively, Arizona will lean on its usual suspects. Corbin Carroll has been streaky of late, with a 12.5-point game mixed in with a scoreless outing. Ketel Marte has shown flashes of real power, including a 23-point performance in his last three games, and Gabriel Moreno has been arguably the hottest bat on the roster, posting a 42-point game and a 25-point game in his last three outings. Nolan Arenado's numbers have been boom-or-bust — a 63.5-point explosion sandwiched between two scoreless nights — which tracks with a veteran capable of carrying a lineup for one big swing.
Cincinnati's answers are thinner. Eugenio Suárez has had moments, including a 23.5-point game recently, but he's also been shut out in other outings. JJ Bleday has shown similar inconsistency, and TJ Friedl has gone scoreless in each of his last three games, which is a troubling sign for a Reds offense that needs table-setters at the top of the order. Sal Stewart has been the picture of mediocrity, hovering in the mid-single digits across his recent outings.
Given Arizona's pitching advantage, Cincinnati's depleted lineup, and the form both clubs have shown over their last several games, this one sets up as a comfortable night for the home team. Rodriguez should be able to work deep into the game against a Reds lineup missing several key everyday players, and Arizona's bats — even in their inconsistency — have more high-end pop than anything Cincinnati can counter with at the moment. Expect the Diamondbacks to jump on Lodolo early and cruise from there.
