Rocchio Powers Guardians Past Tigers in Season-Opening Win
Brayan Rocchio is making a habit of ruining Detroit's week.
The Guardians shortstop authored one of the loudest fantasy stat lines you'll see in early September, piling up 65.5 fantasy points to lead Cleveland to a 7-6 win over the Tigers on Friday. It was a big early-season statement for the 25-year-old and gave the Guardians some early momentum in the AL Central race.
This one played out like a track meet. Both bullpens took some hits, both offenses found gaps, and neither team could put the other away until Cleveland found just enough in the late innings to hang on. The Guardians came in having split their last several outings — a wild 0-11 loss to Toronto sandwiched between wins — and this was the kind of resilient, scrap-for-everything win that can define a season's early tone.
Rocchio was the story from wire to wire. His 65.5 fantasy points dwarfed every other performer on either roster, and it's the kind of night that makes an opponent's pitching staff wince every time his name comes up in the lineup card. Whatever he did at the plate and in the field, it added up to a performance that decided this game.
He didn't do it alone. Chase DeLauter continued to look like one of the more dangerous complementary bats in Cleveland's order, chipping in 30.5 fantasy points from right field. Behind him, the middle infield tandem of Travis Bazzana and Angel Genao each provided a spark — Bazzana with 20.0 fantasy points and Genao adding 16.0 — giving the Guardians production up and down the lineup rather than relying on one or two names. On the mound, Slade Cecconi got the ball and turned in a serviceable 11.2 fantasy points, with Erik Sabrowski (11.5) and Cade Smith (10.0) doing the bullpen work to close it out. Craig Yoho also chipped in 10.0 points in relief. It was a total team effort on a night when Cleveland needed length and answers from multiple arms.
Detroit didn't go quietly, and the Tigers can find some individual bright spots even in the loss. Max Clark and Spencer Torkelson both turned in identical 30.0 fantasy-point nights, giving Detroit's lineup two legitimate threats. Torkelson, in particular, looks like he's picking up where a strong track record would suggest — his blend of power and patience showed up again in the box score. Gleyber Torres added 16.0 fantasy points, and Ben Malgeri chipped in 14.5 from the outfield, but the Tigers simply couldn't match Cleveland's top-end production. On the mound, Tyler Holton was Detroit's most effective arm out of the bullpen, logging 12.0 fantasy points, but it wasn't enough support behind a lineup that came up just one run short.
Cleveland, meanwhile, looks like a team building real confidence early. The Guardians have now won three of their last five, and Rocchio's emergence as a game-breaking performer gives this lineup a different level. If he keeps producing anywhere close to Friday's 65.5-point outburst, Cleveland's going to be tough to deal with in this division all season.
