Webb Silences Cardinals Bats as Giants Edge St. Louis 5-4
The San Francisco Giants got the kind of night they needed from their ace, and it wears No. 62. Logan Webb dominated on the mound, and the Giants held on for a 5-4 win on Tuesday over the St. Louis Cardinals.
This one didn't come easy. San Francisco led for most of the night before St. Louis made things uncomfortable late, but the Giants had built enough of a cushion behind their rotation ace and a couple of clutch bats to survive.
Webb was the story from the opening pitch. He turned in a monster performance worth 48.5 fantasy points, the best of any player on either roster, and the kind of outing that sets a tone for a long season. If the Cardinals were searching for answers against him, they didn't find them Tuesday. When your ace delivers like that in Week 1, it changes the complexion of an early series and gives a clubhouse a reason to believe the rotation is going to carry weight all year.
He needed the support, because St. Louis didn't go quietly. Alec Burleson was terrific for the Cardinals, racking up 28.5 fantasy points and serving as the offensive engine that kept this game within reach into the late innings. Michael McGreevy matched up reasonably well on the mound himself, posting 27.7 fantasy points in the loss, but it wasn't enough to offset Webb's night or the Giants' lineup depth.
San Francisco's offense didn't need to be spectacular with Webb pitching the way he did, but Rafael Devers made sure they had a cushion anyway. Devers turned in a 26.0-point performance, continuing to look like the anchor of this order at first base. Bryce Eldridge, still just 21, chipped in a strong complementary night worth 24.5 points, a reminder that the Giants have some young thump in the middle of their lineup to go with the established names. That kind of production from a 21-year-old in Week 1 is the sort of development storyline San Francisco will want to track all season.
The supporting cast mattered too. Shay Whitcomb and Christian Koss both manned third base duties across the game and each found ways to contribute, with Whitcomb posting 13.0 fantasy points and Koss adding 11.5. Turner Hill chipped in 10.0 points from left field, and the bullpen did its job late, with Trent Harris (9.0 points) and Jason Foley (6.0 points) combining to close the door before St. Louis could complete a comeback.
For the Cardinals, beyond Burleson's big night, there were scattered bright spots that will offer some encouragement even in a loss. César Prieto and Nathan Church each posted 11.0 fantasy points, and Thomas Saggese added 9.5. Justin Bruihl worked out of the bullpen effectively enough to post 8.8 points, and Leonardo Bernal and Bryan Torres each chipped in 8.0. It just wasn't quite enough traffic to overcome the deficit Webb and the Giants' lineup had built.
Zoom out and the early standings picture is starting to take shape. San Francisco has been streaky through the early going, mixing this win with alternating results against the Mets and a loss to Pittsburgh, showing an offense and pitching staff that can be uneven but has real upside when Webb is on the mound. St. Louis, meanwhile, remains a lineup capable of scoring in bunches even in a loss like this one.
It's one game in September, and there's a long stretch of season still to play, but early-week results shape early-week momentum. The Giants have to like the way their rotation looked in the opening days, and the Cardinals have to find some answers against a Webb-led staff that got the better of them Tuesday.
