Elieser Hernández also turned in a respectable relief showing at 9.2 fantasy points. Behind the plate, Drake Baldwin had a solid night with 8.5 fantasy points, matched by Ronald Acuña Jr., who also posted 8.5 despite the lopsided score. But beyond that, the offense sputtered. Mauricio Dubón and Matt Olson each managed 5.0 fantasy points, Ozzie Albies was held to 2.5, and starter AJ Smith-Shawver had a rough time of it, finishing with just 1.8 fantasy points in an outing that set the tone for how the whole night would go.
What it means
For Tampa Bay, this is exactly the kind of early-season statement teams want to make. DĂaz and Caminero look like a formidable middle-of-the-order combination, and if Peralta continues turning in outings like Tuesday's, Tampa Bay's rotation could be a real strength as the season stretches on.
For Atlanta, the concern is more immediate. Dropping to 2-3 with a 7-1 loss isn't the start the Braves wanted. The Braves have shown they can grind out close ones, as evidenced by wins over Philadelphia earlier in their form cycle, but Tuesday's game exposed real vulnerabilities, particularly in the rotation and in getting consistent production beyond Acuña and Baldwin. It's only Week 1, and there's a long season to sort things out, but Atlanta will want to see Smith-Shawver and the rest of the staff bounce back quickly before this early hole gets any deeper.
