The Royals had taken the previous meeting between these two clubs, but Saturday tipped decisively in Boston's favor thanks to its ace on the mound and a lineup that made just enough noise.
Suárez was the story from the jump. At 31, he's shown all season why Boston leans on him in the biggest starts, and this was his best turn yet — a start dominant enough to produce the highest fantasy total on either roster by a wide margin. Carter Jensen was arguably the best hitter on the field for either side, posting 25.0 fantasy points behind the plate — more than anyone on the Royals' roster and enough to have been a difference-maker on another day. Randy Dobnak battled on the mound and still managed 21.2 fantasy points despite coming out on the wrong end of the decision, a sign he kept his team in it longer than the final score might suggest. Bobby Witt Jr. added 12.5 points at shortstop, continuing to be the engine Kansas City leans on, and Salvador Perez chipped in 8.0 points at designated hitter. When half your lineup fails to register, no amount of Jensen or Witt is going to be enough.
For Boston, this is the kind of win that steadies a season that had started to wobble. Losing back-to-back to the Angels raised some early questions, and answering with a decisive victory over Kansas City — fueled by a starter turning in one of the best individual pitching performances of the young season — is exactly the response a team wants. Suárez's outing in particular should give the Red Sox real confidence going forward; if he can replicate anything close to this form regularly, Boston's rotation instantly looks more formidable.
For Kansas City, it's a step back after having won the previous meeting in this series. Jensen and Witt continue to look like players the Royals can build around, but the lack of secondary offense is a real concern this early. Dobnak's outing was solid enough to keep Kansas City competitive, yet solid pitching without run support only gets you so far.
