Both the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers are well below .500 this late in September, but that doesn't mean Saturday's Game 2 lacks juice. With the Twins at 75-84 and the Rangers at 78-80, this middle game of a three-game set is about pride, evaluation, and finishing the year on something other than a whimper.

The two clubs meet for Game 2 of their three-game series after a head-to-head slate earlier this season that saw Minnesota take four of five meetings, including a lopsided 12-2 win and a 16-3 Rangers blowout sandwiched in between. That history means little now, but it's a reminder these two teams have already seen plenty of each other in 2026.

The Twins have actually been trending the right direction lately, going 3-2 in their last five with two wins over San Francisco and a lopsided 8-0 shutout of the Angels mixed in with a pair of losses. It's the kind of form that suggests a team playing loose now that the pressure of contention has eased. Texas, meanwhile, has stumbled home, dropping three of its last five โ€” including back-to-back losses to the Mets โ€” before rebounding to beat Toronto twice to close out that stretch. The Rangers still own the better raw scoring differential of the two clubs, at minus-42 compared to Minnesota's minus-64, but neither number inspires much confidence heading into the weekend.

On the mound, this is a matchup of pitchers heading in opposite directions. Dean Kremer takes the ball for Minnesota carrying a 4.968 ERA, numbers that reflect a rough season for the Twins' rotation as a whole โ€” a rotation gutted by injury. David Festa, Mike Paredes, Cole Sands, Mick Abel, Pablo Lรณpez and Anthony Banda are all out for Minnesota, several on 60-day assignments, forcing the club to piece together innings all year. Kremer has had to soak up starts in a patchwork staff, and the results show it.

Jacob deGrom gives Texas a clear edge in this pitching matchup. His 3.857 ERA is nearly a run and a half better than Kremer's, and even with the Rangers' own injury issues on the mound โ€” Cal Quantrill, Jack Leiter, Jose Corniell, Carter Baumler, Cole Winn and Jalen Beeks are all sidelined โ€” deGrom remains capable of shutting down a lineup on a given afternoon. If Texas is going to snap its recent funk, its ace is the reason why.

Both lineups are dealing with notable absences of their own. Minnesota will again be without center fielder Byron Buxton, left fielder Trevor Larnach and catcher Ryan Jeffers, stripping the middle of their order of thump and forcing more responsibility onto the likes of Josh Bell, Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis. Lee has shown some pop in recent games, posting a 25-point fantasy performance in his last outing after quieter efforts before that, while Luke Keaschall has been the Twins' most consistent offensive performer of late, following up a 31.5-point game with a 20-point showing before going cold in his most recent turn.

Texas has its own issues to navigate, with shortstop Corey Seager, third baseman Josh Jung, designated hitter Joc Pederson and center fielder Evan Carter all unavailable. That leaves Brandon Nimmo, Wyatt Langford and Jake Burger to carry more offensive weight than usual. Burger has been streaky, going from a scoreless outing to a 33.5-point eruption in his last three appearances, while Nimmo has provided steady, if unspectacular, production. Ezequiel Duran rounds out the group as a bottom-of-the-order presence trying to find consistency.

There are no fantasy point projections available for this matchup, so evaluating JockBroker lineups here comes down to reading recent form and injury context rather than leaning on modeled outputs. The absences up and down both rosters make normal usage patterns harder to predict, and that volatility cuts both ways for anyone building a lineup around either team's hitters.

On paper, deGrom's edge on the mound should be the deciding factor. Texas has more talent healthy in its rotation top end, and even a middling version of deGrom gives the Rangers a real advantage against a Twins staff still scrambling to fill holes. Minnesota's recent form is encouraging, but Kremer's ERA suggests he's more likely to keep his team in a dogfight than dominate.

Expect a competitive, low-scoring first several innings before Texas's lineup โ€” even shorthanded โ€” finds enough against Kremer to pull away late. Rangers 6, Twins 3.
